I’m not sure where I first heard about A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future, by Daniel Pink. But I know that I heard about it a number of times since. It’s one of those books that kept popping up in readings and conversations with others.
Pink’s core argument is one that isn’t too hard to affirm: our North American culture is changing, and the general skills that were valued in the last century or so are not enough. We’ve thrived on left-brain skills that relied primarily on logic. The sub-title overemphasizes Pink’s point…the argument is not that right-brainers will rule so much as those who at least equally value what the right side of the brain has to offer.
Pink breaks down the six senses to develop for using the right side of the brain: Design, Story, Symphony, Empathy, Play, and Meaning. I valued this book, not because it was paradigm changing, but because it affirms so much of my own experiences and learning.
If you are in any kind of work that requires some creativity, and especially if you are leading an organization of some kind, pick this book up. The ideas in it have merit and should be weighed in light of your work or organization.
